What it is: Double cleansing refers to using an oil-based cleanser to remove makeup, oil, and sunscreen, then cleansing again with a water-based cleanser to remove sweat and dirt.
Double cleansing just might be the best thing you can do for your skin 😍 If you’re using some form of makeup remover in conjunction with a cleanser each night, you’re already on your way!
Here’s why you need to start ASAP:
- Makeup and sunscreen that’s left on the skin can:
- clog your pores and cause acne breakouts
- cause irritations
- cause discoloration
- turn into a breeding ground for bacteria
- The rest of your skincare routine is, dare we say, useless without a clean canvas!
- Your makeup remover wipes are just pushing the dirt around.
You should be double cleansing if you wear sunscreen (so everyone, right?), wear makeup, live/work in the city, or you get oily throughout the day.
If your skin type is normal, you wear no makeup at all, and you rarely venture outdoors, you’ll probably be alright with some water 🙂
Makeup remover wipes are great for on the go and certainly can be used to take off some eye and lip makeup, but for the most part, you’ll want to ditch them or follow up with an oil cleanser. A wipe might just sweep the surface but an oil cleanser can dig deep into the pores to clear out everything!
Cleansing oils are very watery, but gentle on the skin. Cleansing balms are solid (aka travel-friendly) and more heavy-duty.
For both, you’ll want to apply to dry skin. Gently massage the product onto your skin in circular motions. You can safely use oil cleansers on your eyes as long as it doesn’t trickle in. Don’t forget to take the product below your jawline where there may be foundation 💦
To remove, just rinse off with lukewarm water until it runs clear and move onto Step 2!
Water-based cleansers dissolve water-based impurities, such as sweat, dirt, and leftover residue from step one.
For this step, it’s important you pick a cleanser that will clean without drying out your skin. A squeaky clean canvas is not good and a stripping cleanser can pull too much moisture away. Before trying out a new cleanser, check its pH level (with something like this). You want something with a pH lower than 5.5.
- Foam Cleansers – These tend to be most stripping, but also the most popular because of the “clean, bubbly” foam. They’re very gentle on the skin as long as you pick one that’s low on the pH scale!
- Gel Cleansers – These don’t sud up as much, but they do clean well. They’re also refreshing on the skin because of the gel texture.
- Powder Cleansers – These are the most travel-friendly as they aren’t liquid at all. To use, just add water to create a nice lather. You’ll get a gentle exfoliation out of it too!
You’ll want to lather the product up on wet skin and rinse off with lukewarm water. When rinsing, splash water gently on your face so you’re not rubbing! Pat your skin dry with a towel and you’re all done 👍
Where does cleansing water fit?
Let’s be real- cleansing waters will not replace your cleansing oil or balm. They’re great if you want to clear off some sweat after a workout or remove some makeup prior to cleansing, but that’s all they should be expect to do.
- Start double-cleansing.
- Oil-based cleansers remove makeup and sunscreen. Water-based cleansers remove dirt and sweat.
- Liquid oil cleansers are messy but good for sensitive and dry skin. Solid balm cleansers are best for removing makeup and traveling.
- Massage oil-based cleansers on dry skin and water-based cleansers on wet skin.
- Don’t worry about the oiliness of your first step cleanser- that’ll wash away with your second cleanser!
- Definitely double cleanse at night, but it’s not necessary to do so in the morning as well. You can use your second-step cleanser or skip it altogether and just rinse with water.
