We’re usually told to select our skin type from these options: oily skin, dry skin, or combination skin. The remedies are pretty straight forward: sebum control products on oily skin, moisturize dry skin, divide and conquer combo skin. But if you’re like me, you’ve had to deal with a T-zone that is flakey under a layer of oil 😩
Let’s clear up the basics first:
- oily skin – produces excessive oil throughout the day. Typically no issues with dryness
- dry skin – prone to flakiness and itchiness. Produces little to no oil
- combination skin – dry in some parts, oily in others. Typically dry cheeks and oily T-zone
Dehydrated skin is a temporary condition caused by lack of water and can happen to any skin type. Your skin might suddenly become very dry, but produce more oil than usual to compensate. This can lead to breakouts and clogged pores as well 👎
How to Fix It:
If you are layering on oils and heavy moisturizers to combat the dry patches, it’s time to put them aside. Look for ingredients like hyaluronic acid, aloe, and glycerin. These will pull in the moisture your skin needs 💦
I use the Cosrx Advanced Snail 96 Mucin Power Essence and my skin always soaks it right up 🐌 It’s thick enough that I feel hydrated, but absorbs in quickly and leaves no heaviness.
Start exfoliating once a week to slough off the dead skin buildup. My current favorite is the Dr. G Brightening Peeling Gel. My skin feels ultra soft afterwards and it’s one of the more gentle, yet effective, exfoliators I’ve tried ❤️
Use a hydrating water-based primer. I found that silicone/gel textures and sebum-controlling primers caused my skin to flake and I ended up producing more oil than it can control anyway 😒 I started using Too Faced’s Hangover Replenishing Face Primer last December and it seriously changed the game for me.
If you get oily throughout the day, dust a light layer of loose powder over your T-zone or “bake” your makeup. You’ll get a bit of shine, but nothing a blotting sheet can’t fix.
Put down the anti-acne products. These products typically fight acne by drying out the spot. You definitely don’t need anything drying out your skin! If you need to fix a bad pimple, try using a Cosrx Acne Pimple Master Patch. If you do use drying ingredients like salicylic acid and benzoyl peroxide, be sure to spot treat and not slather it all over your face 🙅
Drink more water. I kid you not, if I don’t drink at least two bottles of water a day, I’m guaranteed desert cheeks the next morning 😭 Don’t forget that hydration comes from within too!
I’m extremely prone to dehydrated skin and my current routine has been keeping everything happy so far 🙇 How do you combat your dehydrated skin moments?
